When the S hits the fan, you might want to talk to anyone who is willing and able, hams, first responders, and so on. Now, I cant cover every first responder frequency in every jurisdiction, but there are some common frequencies that the Baofeng radio can do that can get you talking to someone else. Youll also want some channels that are clear for some secure comms because lets face it, the bad guys are listening to FRS channel 1 too. I did my best to keep it broad and generic to the US and not focus on a specific area. I had originally written this for just a baofeng radio because that is what I have so it wouldnt do AM and CB such. Also, 446.03 vindicated Continue this thread level 1 16 points 3 years ago This. You want the NIFOG. Everything in a concise document, so if youre a government agency, and your radio is equipped with FPP, you can punch what you need in as you go. I dont know if DHS gives this to individuals (the physical print book itself), but they definitely give it to any government agency or amateur radio club that asks nicely. Its a good document, and especially useful when all power goes out and you need something in print. That and the original intent was specific to baofeng radio that you can buy for 25. Baofeng Radio Frequency List License A CoupleIm just getting into this stuff this year and just got a radio and ham license a couple of months ago. You dont really want to have tone squelch in an emergency situation. You want to break squelch on any tone or just carrier squelch, and so generally you dont need a transmit tone either. Ham, not HAM. Where. MHz come from This doesnt respect any standard channel spacing. Its not emission designated for 5 kHz either, it used to be 20 kHz, but now there are interleaved channels with 12.5 kHz BW Mutual is spelled wrong. Things like LE A - the default operation is transmit a CTCSS 167.9, and CSQ receive. You toggle on CTCSS squelch if needed. ![]() ![]() In the field, what you have labeled as NC1IR5 is really just IR 5 - same stuff. CTCSS 167.9, CSQ. ![]() In an emergent situation, where you are without internet but still have power to operate a radio, perhaps even a computer (preferably a toughbook, of course), you are better off with the NIFOG and a savedprinted scanner list of known infrastructure beforehand (radio reference, scanner websites for your local and surrounding areas). You can waste the time programming all these channels in, but its better to just punch things in as needed and save them as you go instead of having to scroll through your list of zones and channels on your radio. And if its already annoying to scroll about on a radio where channels are split into zones, then it will invariably be super annoying to do so with just the up and down buttons of a baofeng.
